According to Wikipedia, First
aid is the first and immediate assistance given to any
person suffering from a serious illness or injury,[1] with care provided to preserve life, prevent the
condition from worsening, or to promote recovery. It includes initial
intervention in a serious condition prior to professional medical help being
available, such as performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while awaiting for an ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of minor conditions, such
as applying a plaster to a cut. First aid is generally performed by someone with basic
medical training
“The idea of First Aid
is knowing what to do in an emergency situation. It is a known fact that, given
the right assistance to a casualty at the right time and place helps greatly to
minimize disabilities and even to prevent death.
Knowledge of First Aid
is another way of preventing and managing injuries in the home, workplace, and
playgrounds. First Aid thus promotes safety and saves medical costs to
individuals, companies and institutions.
First Aid should not
be the responsibility of a few people. Everybody can learn First Aid to prevent
himself or herself from getting injured as well as to be able to perform his or
her civil responsibilities especially in times of distress” Samuel K. Addo
(secretary-general, Ghana Red Cross Society)
During the recent years, a lot of Ghanaian citizens die
through road accident and is as a result of how individuals handle the
casualties (victims). For example, in the case of fatal accident, individuals
that rush to the scene often mishandle the casualties which most at times
render them paralyzed.
In some cases the issue of internal bleeding is hazardous
which causes a sudden death of a lot of casualties. This happens because of
Ghanaians are ignorant of basic First Aid skills. In a scenario; a driver
traveling to Kumasi had a fail in his car brake and lost the track. This driver
knock a big tree but did not had any scratch on the body. The man went home
thinking that everything is alright. During the mid-night, this man went
unconscious and before he was rush to the hospital, this man was already dead.
From medical diagnosis, the man die out of internal
bleeding. That is why it is imperative for the average Ghanaian to acquire the
basic First Aid skills to save life.
Ghana Red Cross Society is admonishing all citizens of the
country to make it a point of doing their best to acquire basic First Aid
training. This article is of the view of highlighting and creating awareness to
the Ghanaian citizens, the need to acquire basic First Aid skills.
